The Withy Grove Story

The story of Withy Grove Veterinary Clinic begins in the 1970s when the surgery was based in Withy Grove House, now a nursing home, from whence it got its name. The practice was sold in the 1980s by the then owner, Terence Bate, to J & M Glassbrook, the vets from Leyland who moved us to our current building on Station Road.

Meanwhile, Michael Clarke, the current owner, was growing up in Essex and surrounded by cats and strongly influenced by the James Herriott books, medical ancestors and a love of all animals, he decided as a teenager that he wanted to be a vet.

Humble Beginnings

Some years later, after qualifying from London university and having had a few jobs in the midlands, he ended up working for the Glassbrooks and was eventually offered the surgery at Bamber Bridge to buy in 1990 when the Glassbrooks decide to consolidate. Knowing the clinic, the staff, the clients and the area Michael was more than happy to take on the business.

At this stage it was a one vet and 3 nurse practice, but expansion meant that after a year Mandy Skinner (then Hogan!) was employed, followed by Suanne Bly (then Tappenden!). Both have stayed with the practice ever since alongside some of the nursing staff and been joined by other vets and nurses along the way. There are now 5 full time vets and 16 nursing and support staff.

Pioneering Approach

Michael has always believed in doing everything possible to keep the clinic working at the highest standards, joining every possible accreditation scheme (currently RCVS accredited, a Veterinary Nurse Training practice Rabbit Welfare Silver Practice, Cat Friendly Practice and Investor in People) as well as investing in new equipment and drugs as they become available, thus we were the first vets in Preston to use the anaesthetic agent Sevoflurane and the practice is extremely well equipped for a first opinion vets.

Part of the Community

The practice continues to grow and we value greatly being part of the community of Bamber Bridge and around.
